چکیده

[1] Understanding the origin and perpetuation of the monsoon cycle has eluded scientists for decades. Using a suite of unprecedented satellite measurements, we show that the antecedents of the active/break monsoon emerge in the western equatorial Indian Ocean (EIO). The initiation of a new rainy phase in the western EIO is preceded by in situ surface wind convergence and central EIO warming, both are induced by the subdued condition over the eastern EIO set up in the previous cycle. Thus, a selfinduction mechanism appears to be operating in maintenance of the Indian monsoon intraseasonal oscillation. The finding here offers a focus for prediction of the active/break Indian monsoon with potential predictability about four weeks in advance. Citation: Wang, B., P. J. Webster, and H. Enhancement of inland penetration of monsoon depressions in the Bay of Bengal due to prestorm ground wetness

[1] Observations of 408 monsoon low-pressure systems (MLPSs) including 196 monsoon depressions (MDs) that formed in the Bay of Bengal during the 1951–2007 period, and the gridded analysis of daily rainfall fields for the same period, were used to identify the association of antecedent rainfall (1 week average rainfall prior to the genesis of MLPS) with the genesis of MLPS and length of inland p...

Review of Advance in Research on Asian Summer Monsoon

The Asian monsoon is the most significant component of the global climate system. During recent two decades, concerned efforts have been made to investigate the Asian monsoon. A substantial achievement has been made in basic physical processes, predictability and prediction since the MONEX of 1978-79. The major advance in our understanding about of the variability of the Asian summer monsoon ha...

Representation of Ocean-Atmosphere Processes Associated with Extended Monsoon Episodes over South Asia in CFSv2

In the present study, we analyze 30-years output from free run solutions of Climate forecast system version 2 (CFSv2) coupled model to assess the model’s representation of extended (>7 days) active and break monsoon episodes over south Asia. Process based diagnostics is applied to the individual and composite events to identify precursor signals in both ocean and atmospheric variables. Our exam...

Short circuit of water vapor and polluted air to the global stratosphere by convective transport over the Tibetan Plateau.

During boreal summer, much of the water vapor and CO entering the global tropical stratosphere is transported over the Asian monsoon/Tibetan Plateau (TP) region. Studies have suggested that most of this transport is carried out either by tropical convection over the South Asian monsoon region or by extratropical convection over southern China. By using measurements from the newly available Nati...

Clay mineralogical and geochemical proxies of the East Asian summer monsoon evolution in the South China Sea during Late Quaternary

The East Asian summer monsoon controls the climatic regime of an extended region through temperature and precipitation changes. As the East Asian summer monsoon is primarily driven by the northern hemisphere summer insolation, such meteorological variables are expected to significantly change on the orbital timescale, influencing the composition of terrestrial sediments in terms of both mineral...
